Team Griffin just competed at its first BJJ tournament of
the season this weekend in Hamilton, Ontario. Although it is still
early in the 2012 season, the returning Provincial Champs wasted no
time in dominating the podium. Team Griffin captured 21 Gold
medals, 19 Silver medals and 9 Bronze medals.
Out of the several teams represented at the Ontario
Grappling Association's Regional Tournament, there are a few that
really stand out. Teams from Joslin's, Xtreme Couture, Gracie
Barra, Adrenaline MMA and Ascension all have strong competitors in
their divisions. A new team added by Defensive Arts from St.
Catharines also shows potential for challenging Team Griffin for a
shot at their title.
"It fascinates me how much of fighting success, and life
success has to do with dealing with adversity", stated Shane Weaver
who is the team's head coach. "Every one of our fighters, including
our coaches are mentally and physically prepared to make another
Championship run", he added.
Coach Weaver teaches all of his fighters that if they lose
a fight by a significant point total, or if they lose a fight by
being physically dominated, it should test them. It should test
their confidence as an individual fighter, it should test their
perception of others, and it should test their will to get back up
and do it again.
There is no magic formula for overcoming adversity as a
team or as an individual, because there are as many different types
of adversity as there are fighters. And, what are tough fights for
one, may be an annoyance for others. Perception always plays a
heavy role in reality. So, when it comes to tough, you don't need
to look any further than the man who is coaching this
team.
When Team Griffin has success, they focus on success and
when they have failure, they still focus on success. Easy to say,
hard to do because it takes unique individuals and special people
to handle the intense rollercoaster ride that is the life of a
fighter.
Tough times do not last, only tough people do, everyone
understands that, but to win another Provincial Championship this
2012 season, these fighters will have to live it and demonstrate
it, every competition.
